3. Position Description and Job Skill Set
Position Overview:
The Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) serves as the central IT body for the state, providing service to agencies and supporting IT initiatives. As part of building internal cloud expertise to support its AWS environment, ITS seeks a highly skilled AWS expert to assist in maintaining its existing AWS infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, and mentoring staff. This position will be integral to the success of ITS’s cloud projects and its Cloud Center of Excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- AWS Environment Management: Oversee and maintain the AWS Organization, ensuring adherence to industry best practices.
- Cloud Architecture: Design and implement AWS solutions that meet performance, security, and scalability requirements.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Serve as a senior contact for complex AWS-related issues, especially network connectivity, coordinating with internal teams and agencies.
- Vendor Relationships: Manage relationships with AWS and third-party vendors to integrate products into the AWS ecosystem.
- Mentorship and Training: Provide knowledge transfer, training, and coaching to build internal cloud expertise, including developing technical documentation and standards.
- Governance and Security: Collaborate with ITS and agency security teams to ensure security and compliance standards are met.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Deep knowledge of AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, Lambda, CloudFormation, etc.).
- Experience leading cloud migrations in a multi-account environment.
- Strong troubleshooting skills in network connectivity, both within AWS and in integration with on-premises systems.
- Familiarity with AWS Landing Zone and Accelerator implementations.
- Proficiency in infrastructure as code (CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CDK) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience implementing security best practices (IAM policies, encryption, network segmentation).
- Familiarity with DevOps principles, containerization (Docker, ECS, EKS), and serverless architectures.
- Excellent communication skills for explaining complex concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring and fostering a collaborative, learning-focused environment.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Ability to lead architectural reviews and navigate ambiguity in complex business problem-solving.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
- AWS Professional-level certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional).
- Experience in a regulated environment (HIPAA, CJIS, IRS 1075 compliance).
- Knowledge of ITIL, project management methodologies (PMP, Agile), and enterprise IT governance.
- Familiarity with other public cloud providers and hybrid-cloud environments.
- Working knowledge of scripting/programming languages (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
